-The Battle of Antietam-
On September 17,1862 near Sharpsburg, Maryland and Antietam Creek the first major battle on Union soil took place. Soldiers walked blindly into a cornfield, troops entering from opposite sides. Killing too place for 2.5 hours, and 2,700 confederates were lost, a Union victory. Corpses lay out everywhere. But killing began again later that day at Sunken Rd, now also known as 'Bloody Lane' in front of a Duncan church. Below is a photo of the sunken road, today and after the battle in 1862. 5,000 Union troops march into the sunken road while the Confederates aim their rifles (wile hiding behind the fencing along the road) at Union heads. The Union catches up into the Sunken road and eventually overpowered the Confederacy. Said to be similar to 'shooting fish in a barrel'. 5,000 men were killed in just 3.5 hours.
